OpenAI Quietly Launches ChatGPT Translate to Take On Google Translate

OpenAI continues to expand ChatGPT’s scope beyond general-purpose AI, and translation now joins the list. After recently rolling out a Health panel inside ChatGPT and signaling deeper ambitions in healthcare, the company has quietly launched a new ChatGPT Translate feature on the web.

ChatGPT Translate quietly launches on the web

According to Bleeping Computer, the new tool lives at chatgpt.com/translate and works without a paid account. The experience mirrors familiar web-based translators while adding AI-driven interaction that goes beyond simple text conversion.

ChatGPT Translate supports more than 50 languages and detects languages automatically. Users can paste or type text, speak directly, or upload files and photos for translation. The tool focuses on preserving meaning and context rather than producing literal, word-for-word results.

Why OpenAI’s translation tool could challenge Google Translate

One standout feature involves customization. Users can adjust the translation style using options such as “more fluent,” “business formal,” “academic,” or “explain like a child.” After the translation finishes, users can continue the conversation, ask follow-up questions, or request refinements.

That conversational approach positions ChatGPT Translate as a potential competitor to Google Translate. While Google Translate emphasizes speed and scale, OpenAI leans toward contextual understanding and interactive feedback.

For now, the feature only appears on the web. The ChatGPT apps on Android and iOS do not include a dedicated translation toggle, and OpenAI has not confirmed which model powers the tool.

Alongside this launch, a recent leak suggests OpenAI is working on ChatGPT-branded earbuds, hinting that more consumer-facing products may arrive sooner than expected.
