OpenAI Unveils Education for Countries to Bring AI Into National Education Systems

Despite projections that it could lose up to $14 billion this year, OpenAI continues to push forward with ambitious plans, including a dedicated AI device and new large-scale initiatives focused on education and workforce development.

The company is betting that long-term adoption of AI tools across governments, schools, and institutions will offset near-term financial pressure.

Education for Countries targets national AI-ready education systems

OpenAI announced Education for Countries on January 21, 2026, as a new pillar of its broader OpenAI for Countries initiative. The program focuses on helping governments modernize education systems and prepare future workforces using AI.

OpenAI plans to work directly with governments, ministries of education, university consortia, and researchers to integrate AI into national education strategies. A major goal involves expanding access to ChatGPT Edu and advanced AI models like GPT-5.2 to support teaching, learning, and research.

The initiative also emphasizes customization, allowing AI tools to align with local curricula, learning priorities, and national education goals. OpenAI will support large-scale research to measure how AI affects student outcomes and teacher productivity.

Training, research, and safeguards form core pillars

Education for Countries includes OpenAI Certification programs and tailored training for educators and students. OpenAI will collaborate with the OpenAI Academy to deliver practical AI skills for classrooms and universities.

The initiative also aims to build a global partner network that includes governments, researchers, and education leaders who can share best practices for AI adoption. Initial participating countries include Estonia, Greece, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Trinidad & Tobago, Italy (through CRUI), and the United Arab Emirates.

OpenAI says the program prioritizes safe, age-appropriate AI use, with pilot programs and protective measures designed specifically for classroom environments.

In related developments, ChatGPT has begun rolling out age-prediction features to better protect underage users, while OpenAI has also launched a limited promotion offering ChatGPT Plus for free to select accounts.
