Opera GX Finally Lands on Linux with Built-in VPN & Ad Blocker

If you have been waiting for Opera GX to land on Linux, the wait is finally over. Today, Opera officially announced that its gaming-focused browser is now available on Linux. The company says it is committing long-term support with a dedicated team focused on bug fixes, updates, and improvements tailored for the Linux community.

Opera GX arrives on Linux with gaming-focused and privacy features

Opera GX for Linux includes GX Control, which allows users to limit RAM and network usage so games can run smoothly in the background. There’s also a Hot Tabs Killer feature that helps shut down resource-heavy tabs instantly. Besides performance, Opera GX also integrates platforms like Discord and Twitch directly into the sidebar. It means that you can chat or watch streams without constantly switching tabs, which should make multitasking a lot smoother.

On the customization front, Opera GX continues to lean heavily into personalization. You can tweak themes, sounds, shaders, and even core UI elements. Meanwhile, the GX Store offers thousands of mods, many created by the community, ranging from game-inspired themes to more experimental designs.

Privacy is another area Opera is highlighting for Linux users. The browser includes built-in ad and tracker blockers, along with a zero-log VPN. Opera also claims that it does not track browsing history, location data, or search queries, aligning with what many Linux users expect.

As for availability, Opera GX supports major Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and OpenSUSE. Installation can be done using .deb or .rpm packages, making it fairly straightforward for most users. Moreover, it’s worth noting that Opera has also pushed version 129 to the stable channel, updating it to Chromium 145 while introducing deeper AI integration via Google’s Gemini.
