Riot Games Announces Layoffs From the 2XKO Team; Here's Why

Riot Games has announced a reduction in the size of the team working on its fighting game 2XKO, citing the need for a more sustainable approach as the title continues to evolve. In a statement shared with the community, Riot emphasized that the decision was not made lightly and reflects wider trends in player engagement.

Nearly 80 employees have reportedly been laid off from the team

Although the number hasn’t been mentioned in the official announcement, GameDeveloper reports that the fresh layoffs have reportedly hit nearly 80 developers from the 2XKO team. According to Riot, 2XKO has found a passionate core audience, but overall momentum has not reached the level necessary to support the existing team structure.

By downsizing, the company aims to focus on making key improvements to the game, including features and updates players have been requesting. Specific plans for upcoming changes are expected to be shared in the near future.

Despite the restructuring, Riot confirmed that its 2026 Competitive Series plans remain unchanged. The company reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with tournament organizers and supporting the events that drive the fighting game community.

Riot Games commits support the affected employees

Riot also highlighted its dedication to supporting team members affected by the reduction, offering six months of notice pay and severance where applicable, while assisting employees in exploring other opportunities within the company.

Tom Cannon, addressing the community directly, stressed that the move is a shift in operations, not a reflection on the talent or contributions of the 2XKO team. “The people who helped ship 2XKO poured years of creativity, care, and belief into this game,” Cannon said.
