Sony Could Face A Massive Upgrade Problem With The PlayStation 6

playstation plus extra games

The founder of Alderon Games recently pointed out a major hurdle Sony will face when it launches the PlayStation 6. In a recent episode of Moore’s Law is Dead, Matthew Cassells, founder of Alderon Games, noted that a large chunk of console players still use older hardware because the visual leap to current systems just did not seem worth the cost.

Getting people to drop hundreds of dollars on a brand-new console might be incredibly difficult this time around.

A large chunk of gamers are skipping the current generation consoles entirely

Cassells revealed that roughly 30 to 40 percent of the people playing games from his studio are still using a base PlayStation 4. These players simply have not seen a big enough difference in graphics or performance to justify buying a PlayStation 5. When the PlayStation 6 eventually comes out, Sony will have to prove that its new system offers a massive jump in quality.

If the main selling point is just better ray tracing or improved artificial intelligence upscaling, average players might just ignore it.

This behavior impacts game development

If gamers decide to wait on buying the new system, it creates a ripple effect across the entire industry. A slow adoption rate means developers will have to keep making games that work on both the PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 6 for a much longer time. This extended crossover period forces studios to build their games around older, weaker hardware.

To avoid this, Cassells suggests Sony might need to release an affordable handheld option alongside the main console to tempt players into making the jump.
