Sony to Reveal January 2026 PlayStation Plus Lineup With PS5-First Approach

In our report from earlier today, we covered that PS Plus Essential is set to get some game drops for January 2026, whereas four games will exit the “Extra” tier. Well, that’s not the only news that’s coming in. Sony is reportedly also working on an upcoming reveal, where it will introduce the first monthly PlayStation Plus lineup under new rules that basically change how the subscription works.

Starting January 2026, PS4 games will no longer be guaranteed as part of the monthly offerings. That’s big news for anyone with older PS consoles. Sony’s primary focus will be on PS5 titles. In other words, it means that PS4 games will only appear on a limited and occasional basis.

The decision appears to have resulted from an official confirmation in the past, in which Sony said that the majority of active PlayStation Plus subscribers are now playing on PS5. With that transition largely complete, the company is now changing its subscription strategy around its latest hardware.

Now that the PS5 shift is confirmed, January’s PS Plus lineup will be the first real test for Sony. While Sony hasn’t confirmed any titles yet, industry analysts expect the selection to be more aligned toward PS5 exclusives and more recent AAA releases. The new games will be available starting January 6, 2026, across the Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers.

As mentioned earlier, Sony is also expected to remove some titles from the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium catalogs later in the month. Those removals are likely to take effect on January 20, 2026. Again, that hasn’t been confirmed by Sony either.

Only time will tell whether the company’s PS5-first approach will be feasible. What do you think about Sony’s shift in its approach? Let us know in the comments below.
