Robotic Process Automation (RPA) enables enterprises to automate repetitive tasks using machines instead of human intervention. It’s an excellent solution for ensuring scalability and reliability. Besides, RPA uses the company’s existing IT architecture and doesn’t need elaborate system implementation.

One of the most recognizable names in the RPA industry is the UiPath platform. UiPath Orchestrator is a web-based RPA tool you can use to manage your entire fleet of UiPath Robots from a single place. It unifies Attended, Unattended, NonProduction, Studio, and StudioX Robots, giving you full control over the assets and resources.

Overview of UiPath Orchestrator features

    • Provisioning: facilitates a connection between UiPath Robots and a control center
    • Deployment: makes sure that the Robots receive the correct package versions to deploy processes
    • Configuration: preserves the UiPath Robot environments and processes configuration
    • Queues: ensures that tasks and processes are correctly distributed across the Robots

Here’s how UiPath Orchestrator operates each type of Robot:

  • Attended: human assistance is required for Attended Robots on the same machine. The Orchestrator facilitates a centralized solution for executing and logging repetitive business processes
  • Unattended: it’s not necessary to interfere in the Robot processes since operations are executed automatically in virtual environments, on any number of processes. In addition to the Attended Robot features, the Orchestrator adds support for work queues, remote process execution, monitoring, scheduling
  • Studio and StudioX: they share the Unattended Robot characteristics, but the Orchestrator should only be used for development
  • NonProduction: also shares the Unattended Robots features, but should only be used for development and testing purposes

UiPath editions

The UiPath platform is mainly oriented toward enterprises. It offers 60-days free trials to UiPath Studio, UiPath Enterprise Cloud, and UiPath Enterprise Server, which also include Orchestrator licenses. Once the 60 days are up, you have to either uninstall UiPath or contact the sales department to purchase a software license.

Nevertheless, individuals and small teams will be happy to know there’s a forever-free version called UiPath Community Cloud, which also includes 1 Orchestrator license.

How to install UiPath Orchestrator

The UiPath Orchestrator can be installed in three ways:

  • Windows setup file: on one or more nodes, but the repair functionality is unsupported
  • Azure installation script: on one or more nodes in the Azure Portal
  • UiPath Platform installer: for Orchestrator, Robot, and Studio (recommended on one node)

When using the Windows MSI file, you can configure the IIS settings like website and app pool, create firewall rules for the website port you specified, and prepare the SQL Server database. All NuGet feeds for packages and activities can be installed with automatic settings. You can also install Elasticsearch for logging as well as activate Windows authentication.

The components of the Azure installation script are similar to the MSI, but UiPath Orchestrator can be set up in the Azure Portal with app services. The UiPath platform installer is identical to the MSI but doesn’t support command-line arguments.

UiPath Orchestrator interface

The web-based user interface of UiPath Orchestrator is quite intuitive, providing quick access to the main components. The dashboard displays the following menus on the left side: Monitoring (Robots, Jobs, Queues, Logs), Automations (Processes, Triggers, Queues, Assets, Tasks) and Management features (Folders, Users, Robots, Machines, Packages, Task Catalogs).

What is UiPath Orchestrator used for

To conclude, UiPath Orchestrator is one of the most powerful and robust applications you can find in the RPA market. Using an intuitive interface and resourceful tools, you can easily manage and control all UiPath robots from a web-based environment.

With drag-and-drop support, it’s possible to automate repetitive tasks with little or no human assistance. Furthermore, rich user documentation is available online to clarify any issue you might stumble upon when using the UiPath Orchestrator.
