Valve could be getting ready to introduce a reservation queue system for the Steam Machine, based on newly discovered Steam backend code spotted by SteamTracking and Reddit user “pepeizq”, as VideoCardz reports.

The discovery comes shortly after the Steam Controller reportedly sold out quickly, with many units appearing on resale platforms like eBay. Valve will handle the controller shortage through a reservation queue system, and newly uncovered backend references suggest the company may expand the same approach to future Steam hardware.

New Steam Backend Code References Reservation Features

A recent Steam community JavaScript update reportedly added several new reservation-related fields and hardware package references. The code mentions multiple Valve hardware products, including Steam Machine, Steam Frame, Steam Controller, and Steam Deck.

The newly discovered Steam Machine package IDs include:

  • 1629447
  • 1629446
  • 1629458
  • 1629460

SteamDB findings reportedly connect those package IDs through changelist inference to AppID 4165910, listed internally as “Hardware Steam Machine.”

Multiple Steam Machine Configurations May Be Planned

Community speculation on Reddit suggests Valve could launch several configurations of the rumored device. Current theories point toward 512GB and 2TB variants, potentially sold either with or without a Steam Controller bundle.

Part of that speculation comes from Valve previously confirming support for both 512GB and 2TB storage options alongside microSD expansion capabilities.

While Valve has not officially announced the Steam Machine or its specifications, the backend package structure appears to align with multiple hardware configurations.

Reservation System Mirrors Steam Controller Rules

The same backend update reportedly expanded the Steam Controller reservation queue system as well, hinting at a broader hardware reservation infrastructure inside Steam.

Existing Steam Controller reservation rules reportedly include:

  • Steam account must remain in good standing
  • Purchase history required before April 27, 2026
  • Users receive a 72-hour purchase window after invitation

Those restrictions likely aim to reduce scalping and automated purchases, especially after rapid sellouts affected previous Valve hardware launches.

Pricing Still Unknown

Valve has not revealed official pricing for any Steam Machine hardware. However, earlier retailer placeholder listings reportedly referenced both 512GB and 2TB versions with relatively high pre-release pricing.

For now, Valve has not confirmed the existence of a new Steam Machine. Still, the newly discovered Steam backend references continue fueling speculation that new Steam hardware may arrive sooner than expected.
