Valve Publishes Steam Controller CAD Models for Modders and Accessory Makers

Valve encourages Steam Controller accessory development

Valve has published official CAD files for the new Steam Controller shortly after the device reportedly sold out within a day of launch and began appearing on eBay through resellers. The move suggests Valve expects a strong modding and accessory ecosystem around the controller from the start.

As Valve shared, the download package includes STP and STL models for both the Steam Controller and the Steam Controller Puck. The files also contain detailed engineering drawings, measurements, and keep-out zones under a Creative Commons license.

Valve opens the door for custom accessories

The released files make it easier for modders, hobbyists, and accessory makers to create custom hardware without relying on reverse engineering.

Users can now design custom shells, grips, stands, docks, mounts, and other accessories with accurate dimensions directly from Valve’s official models. That could significantly speed up third-party accessory development, especially within the 3D-printing community.

Accessory manufacturers and hardware partners may also benefit from the release since they can prototype products faster and avoid compatibility issues.

Valve continues its open hardware approach

This is not the first time Valve has shared hardware design resources publicly. The company previously released CAD files for earlier hardware products, continuing its long-standing approach toward mod-friendly devices and community experimentation.

The reported upcoming Steam Machine also appears to follow that philosophy. According to early details, the device features a removable front panel, and CAD files for those panels may arrive later as well.

Why the release matters

Publishing official CAD files gives the community a head start on building accessories and modifications around the Steam ecosystem. It also allows Valve to gather indirect feedback through community-created ideas and hardware experiments.

The timing also adds more attention to Valve’s hardware plans after reports claimed the company recently imported roughly 50 tons of gaming hardware into the United States. That sparked speculation that a new Steam Machine announcement could happen soon.
