WhatsApp Cross-Device Resume Rolls Out on Windows 11

WhatsApp Cross-Device Resume support is rolling out on Windows 11, allowing users to continue phone conversations directly from the taskbar. Windows Latest spotted the feature working between Android phones and the WhatsApp desktop app.

When a WhatsApp notification arrives on a connected Android phone, Windows 11 can display a separate WhatsApp icon on the taskbar. The icon includes a small phone indicator to show that the activity originated on another device.

Windows 11 Can Open the Exact WhatsApp Chat

Hovering over the special taskbar icon displays a “Resume from your phone” prompt. Users can then select “Continue on this PC” to open WhatsApp on Windows.

Instead of opening the WhatsApp homepage or recent chat list, Resume attempts to load the exact conversation linked to the phone notification. This can save time when users move between their Android phone and Windows PC throughout the day.

The feature forms part of Microsoft’s wider effort to improve cross-device experiences in Windows 11. Similar functionality allows supported apps and activities to continue from a connected phone on a PC.

WhatsApp Performance Limits the Experience

Although WhatsApp Resume works as intended when triggered, the desktop app’s performance remains a major limitation. WhatsApp for Windows can take several seconds to load the requested conversation after users click the Resume prompt.

Meta previously moved WhatsApp users to a newer Windows app built around a Chromium-based WebView2 architecture. The change replaced the earlier native Windows experience, but the current app can feel slower when opening and switching between conversations.

These delays reduce the usefulness of Resume because the feature aims to provide an immediate transition between devices. Waiting several seconds for the correct chat to load can make opening the conversation manually feel just as fast.

Resume Prompts Can Appear Inconsistently

WhatsApp Resume prompts also do not always appear when they would prove useful. A phone notification may arrive without Windows displaying the separate taskbar icon.

When the prompt appears correctly, however, Windows generally opens the right WhatsApp conversation. This suggests that conversation matching works reliably, while prompt availability and desktop app performance need further improvement.

Microsoft and Meta could refine the experience through future Windows and WhatsApp updates. Faster loading and more consistent Resume prompts would make the feature more practical for users who regularly switch between devices.

How to Disable WhatsApp Resume

Users who do not plan to use WhatsApp Resume can disable the feature through the Apps section of the Windows 11 Settings app.

Turning it off prevents Windows from displaying WhatsApp continuation prompts for phone activity. Users can still open and use the standard WhatsApp desktop app normally.

WhatsApp May Need a Native Windows App

Cross-device Resume adds a useful connection between Android phones and Windows 11 PCs. However, the WhatsApp desktop app’s loading times may discourage users from relying on the feature.

A future native Windows version of WhatsApp could provide faster startup times, smoother navigation, and a more responsive Resume experience. Until then, the WebView2-based app remains the biggest obstacle to making cross-device continuation feel seamless.
