Beware! Nasty Windows 10 app ads push fake virus alerts

Recently, many Windows 10 users reported that Microsoft Games and some other applications are affected by fake virus alerts.

Some reports suggested that fraudsters are using native Windows 10 apps to deliver such malicious applications.

According to the reports, Microsoft’s advertising network is running some really fraudulent ads. Windows 10 users may see fake websites informing them about virus infection on their systems.

Alternatively, you may see a message stating that you have won a major lottery prize.

It is surprising to see that fraudsters are using Microsoft apps to target Windows 10 users. This situation is pretty alarming because some novice users may fall into the trap. In the worst case scenario, they can even submit sensitive information.

How to block fake virus alerts

One Windows user who experienced similar issues reported that:

I also have had the ” your machine is infected” and once closed it didn’t come back again. The “fake survey win a prize ” one is being more problematic in that yes it does go away when you close the tab but unfortunately, it keeps coming back. Since I installed Malwarebytes it is blocked but not blocked from trying so whilst I no longer get the” survey” I am getting page blocked interrupting my game about 3 or four times a minute which is frustrating to say the least. 

It is recommended that you immediately close such webpages or tabs. That is the only way you can avoid potential attacks targetting your system.

Microsoft has yet to take serious action against these fake advertisement campaigns. A better solution to deal with this issue is to install and configure an ad-blocking program. 

It seems that Microsoft’s services are flooded by phishing scams. Last month, Microsoft Azure services platform came under attack. Let’s wait and see how Microsoft deals with this situation.
