Windows 11 26H2 Won’t Be a Huge Upgrade for 24H2 and 25H2 Users, But 26H1 is a Different Story

KB5074105 windows 11

Windows 11 26H2 isn’t far away. As the release date is approaching, Microsoft cared to detail what users can expect from its next annual update. Contrary to what you think, the biggest change may be how little work the upgrade requires.

Windows 11 26H2 takes the smaller upgrade route

Microsoft says Windows 11 26H2 will use the same shared servicing branch as versions 24H2 and 25H2. That means compatible devices can receive the release through a small enablement package, and the new update might be less than 200KB. The company describes the process as similar to installing a monthly update. Users should see quicker installations, less disruption, and no need for full system reimaging.

This approach works because 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share the same source code base. They also share security updates, quality fixes, and compatibility validation. The feature difference comes from which capabilities are enabled. Microsoft says issues affecting 26H2 should also affect 25H2 under this shared model.

26H1 users face a completely different upgrade path

There is one important catch for Windows 11 26H1 users. Microsoft says those devices can’t upgrade directly to 26H2 because 26H1 uses a different Windows core. For organizations, Microsoft recommends testing 26H2 through the Windows Insider Program. Existing tools including Intune, Autopatch, and WSUS will support deployment.

The update also resets the support lifecycle. Home and Pro editions receive 24 months, while Enterprise and Education editions receive 36 months.

Microsoft has not provided a final public release date yet. However, the company says 26H2 is already available through the Insider Experimental channel, with broader testing planned later.

As for the upcoming features, the new Windows 11 26H1 Experimental build has been released recently, so you might want to try it. The company has also released new Windows 11 Beta and Experimental builds for users on the 25H2 version.
