Windows 11 released a new build, 27774, for Insiders enrolled in the Canary channel. This build focuses on performance improvements and security fixes.
One of the main features of this build is that it introduces a new way to enable Administrator protection. You can now enable the feature through the Account Protection tab in Windows Security settings. This will be particularly useful for home users who don’t have an IT admin to help them enable the feature.
After enabling Administrator protection, you will notice that the prompt when you try to elevate an untrusted and unsigned application with admin privileges will now come with more significant color-coded regions extending over the app description. This is designed to make the prompt more noticeable and make users feel more secure about the decision they’re about to make.
Another notable change is that when installing Windows from installation media, you will see a confirmation dialog when formatting or deleting partitions. This is meant to prevent users from accidentally wiping the wrong drive.
The Administrator protection was further enhanced with additional settings, as spotted by tech enthusiast @phantomofearth, in Canary 27783. These settings will no longer show the usual confirmation dialogs after enabling developer mode. This means you should be able to easily move around Windows 11 without needing permission or agreeing to it.
Microsoft has also released ISO images for Windows 11 build 27774, ideal for clean installations. You can grab them from the company’s website here.
One of the underlying issues causing accent-colored window borders not to appear when enabled and preventing windows from displaying shadows when enabled has been fixed. The build also addresses an issue causing window launching animations to display despite the setting to show animations being turned off.
The build has a few known issues, such as causing the Xbox app to fail to launch with a “Please try again” error sometimes. The recent build also breaks Windows Hello PIN and biometrics on some newer Copilot+ PCs, causing File Explorer not to render correctly when restored after being minimized.
A full list of improvements, fixes, and known issues for the Windows 11 27774 Canary build can be found in Microsoft’s blog post.
In other news, the Redmond-based tech giant recently fixed the Auto HDR feature, which blocked millions of gamers from installing the 24H2 update. The fix was released with the latest build to the Canary Channel.
