scan QR code to troubleshoot BSoDs

QR codes are increasingly being used to share information securely whether it is a Wi-Fi password or a website so if you’re on Windows 11, there are different ways you can scan the QR code.

Microsoft included QR codes on Blue Screen of Death to help you get information quickly on the error codes since a BSoD usually shuts down your PC. You get to scan it fast enough before the screen goes black and troubleshoot it.

Aside from BSoDs, you can also scan your Wi-Fi password as a QR code especially, in cases where you’ve forgotten the login credentials.

How do I scan QR codes on Windows 11?

1. By using the Camera app

  1. Press the Windows key, type Camera, and select the Camera app from the search results.
  2. Hold the QR code to display in front of the camera and wait for it to scan the QR code automatically.
  3. Once it’s done, a URL will be displayed which you can click to direct you to the website.

The only drawback to using the camera is that it may not be clear enough to detect the QR code or in some cases, the QR code cannot be decoded.

2. By using Microsoft Edge

  1. Launch Microsoft Edge and type in the following line in the search bar: edge://flags/
  2. Scroll down until you reach the flag labelled Enable sharing page via QR Code.Enable QR Code Edge
  3. Mark it as Enabled and restart the browser.

The Edge flags feature may not be available in newer versions. You may have to downgrade your browser to access this feature.

3. By using a phone

  1. Open your phone’s camera and point to the QR code on your Windows 11 screen.
  2. You should be redirected to the webpage. (Most phone cameras may not have this built-in QR code scanner so you may have to download an app from the app store).
  3. You can visit the Play Store for Android users, search for the QR Code Reader app page and click on the Install button.
  4. Once installed, launch the app and point the phoneโ€™s back camera at the QR code.
  5. The mobile will then scan the code and you can tap on the link provided by the code to open the troubleshooting page.

4. By using third-party apps

You can download an app from the Microsoft Store that reads QR codes or take a screenshot of the QR code and upload it to free online QR code scanners.

Additional tips for effective QR code scanning

When taking photos of the QR code, ensure your camera lens is clean and there’s no glare on the screen. Also, ensure your webcam drivers are up-to-date or the QR code will go undetected.

While QR codes are becoming popular in sharing information, keep in mind that you can be hacked using a QR code. Before you scan the QR code, ensure the sender is a trusted source and install a comprehensive antivirus that can detect and block any malicious websites.

Aside from scanning QR codes, you can also create your own. It’s easy, especially withย QR code generators.
