Xbox Series S and X have always had trouble with storage, as the 1TB or even 2TB are not enough anymore to hold more than 15-20 games. In 2023, Starfield alone occupied 125 GB after installation, so you can imagine.

However, it seems that Microsoft has a solution. The company announced that its latest Insider build for the Alpha Skip-Ahead Ring will introduce the possibility of expanding the Xbox storage with support for larger drives.

How? With external drives, of course. You’ll be able to connect drives larger than 16TB thanks to a new option. These drivers will be automatically formatted in multiple partitions, and the Xbox console will utilize all available space for games and apps.

It’s worth noting that these drives will appear as multiple devices in the storage devices list after formatting.

This option will allow users to significantly expand their storage without necessarily having to take their Xbox into service and add additional SSDs (although, thanks to Microsoft’s newest reparability program, you also have that option).

This way, you’ll easily be able to buy external drives and install games on them.

Thanks, Xbox!
