Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming Gets Monthly Limits Across All Tiers
Microsoft is introducing monthly Xbox Cloud Gaming limits for Game Pass subscribers starting in November 2026, ending unlimited streaming across its three subscription tiers.
The company confirmed the changes in a recent Xbox Cloud Gaming announcement, following earlier reports about monthly streaming caps.
Microsoft estimates that the new limits will affect approximately 4% of Game Pass subscribers. Players who exceed their monthly allowance will need to purchase additional cloud gaming hours through the Xbox Store.
Xbox Game Pass cloud gaming limits start in November
Starting next month, Microsoft will introduce different monthly streaming allowances depending on the subscription tier:
- Game Pass Ultimate: 15 hours per month.
- Game Pass Premium: 10 hours per month.
- Game Pass Essential: 5 hours per month.
Once subscribers use their included hours, they can purchase additional streaming time separately.
Microsoft has not disclosed how much extra cloud gaming hours will cost or whether it will offer discounted packages for existing subscribers.
Xbox Cloud Gaming will no longer require Game Pass
Microsoft is also introducing standalone cloud gaming access, allowing players to purchase streaming hours without maintaining an active Game Pass subscription.
The option will let users stream eligible games they already own on supported devices, potentially making cloud gaming more accessible to occasional players who don’t want a recurring subscription.
However, Microsoft has yet to confirm pricing, supported games, regional availability, or how subscribers will track their remaining monthly hours. The company plans to share more details in November.
Microsoft cites rising cloud gaming costs
According to Microsoft, the restrictions aim to address increasing infrastructure costs as cloud gaming usage continues to grow.
While the company expects the limits to affect only a small percentage of subscribers, players who regularly stream games for extended periods could face additional monthly expenses.
The changes also follow reports that Microsoft could introduce customizable Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, suggesting further changes to how players access its gaming services.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s gaming division has also made headlines after the Xbox CTO disputed reports of an operating system conflict involving Project Helix and private equity firms reportedly considered acquiring Xbox for as much as $150 billion.
