High CPU Usage In Minecraft: 7 Ways to Fix It

What can I do to fix Minecraft’s high CPU usage?

Before we start, make sure that:

1. Use the Task Manager

1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
2. On the Processes tab, right-click on OpenJDK Platform binary and choose Go to details.
3. Right-click on javaw.exe, and choose Set Affinity.
4. On the next window, remove the checkmark from All Processors and select only CPU 1, 2 & 3. Click OK.
5. Right-click on javaw.exe again and choose Set Priority.
6. Change priority from Normal to Below Normal.

2. Check scheduled tasks

1. Press the Windows key, type Control Panel and click Open.
2. Go to View by, and from the drop-down, select Category.
3. Now click System and Security.
4. Click Windows Tools. 
5. From the list of tools, select Task Scheduler.
6. On the Task Scheduler window, under Task Status, you will get the list of scheduled tasks.
7. From the drop-down menu, select the Last 30 days for the Status of tasks that started in the following period.
8. Scroll through the list of tasks and identify which could have caused the high CPU usage.

3. Disable browser plugins

1. Open your preferred browser. Here we are using Chrome.
2. Click on three dots, click More Tools, and then select Extensions.
3. Check the list of extensions installed and click Remove for the unwanted ones.

4. Update drivers using Device Manager

1. Press Windows + R to open the Run window.
2. Type Devmgmt.msc and press Enter.
3. Click on Display adapters and expand it. 
4. Right-click on the graphics driver and click Update driver.
5. On the next screen, click Search automatically for drivers.
6. Now, follow the on-screen prompts.

5. Run your computer in a clean boot environment

1. Press Windows + R to open the Run console.
2. Type msconfig and press Enter to open System Configuration.
3. Go to the Services tab.
4. Put a checkmark on Hide all Microsoft Services and click Disable all.
5. Go to the Startup tab, and click Open Task Manager.
6. On the Task Manager window, go to all the Enabled items and click Disable.
7. Click OK on the Task Manager window.
8. Now click Apply and OK to close the System Configuration window.
9. On the next prompt, click Restart.

6. Adjust your PC for the best performance

1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
2. Go to System, then About.
3. Click Advanced system settings.
4. On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
5. Click on the radio button to Adjust for best performance.
6. Now click Apply and OK.
7. Restart your PC.

7. Use the Registry Editor

1. Press Windows + R to open the Run window.
2. Type regedit and hit Enter to open Registry Editor.
3. Follow this path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
4. Locate and double-click ClearPageFileAtShutDown. 
5. Now change the Value data to 1.
6. Click OK and restart your computer to let the changes take effect.

Why is Minecraft so CPU-heavy?

There are a few reasons why Minecraft might have been using high CPU resources, some of them are listed below:
