Microsoft Finally Fixes Windows Bug That Broke Start Menu and File Explorer
KB5095093, Microsoft’s June preview update, includes several important fixes for Windows, including a storage bug that could consume several gigabytes of space, as Neowin writes.
The update also addresses a serious Windows Shell issue that could break core parts of the operating system, including the Start menu, Search, Settings, the Taskbar, and File Explorer.
June Preview Update Fixes Windows Storage Issue
One of the biggest fixes in KB5095093 targets a storage problem linked to the Capability Access Manager process.
Capability Access Manager is a default Windows service. Because of the bug, Windows could use several extra gigabytes of storage space on affected systems.
Microsoft fixed the issue as part of the broader June preview update package.
Microsoft Fixes Broken Windows Shell Components
KB5095093 also fixes a major issue affecting several Windows Shell components.
The bug could cause important Windows interface elements to stop working properly, with affected users experiencing problems with the Start menu, Search bar, Settings, Taskbar, and File Explorer.
This issue mostly affected provisioned PCs, which are commonly used in business, education, and managed IT environments.
Microsoft said compatibility conflicts with XAML caused the problem.
Long-Running Shell Bug Finally Gets Fixed
Microsoft had acknowledged that the Windows Shell components bug had existed since July 2025.
That means affected users and IT admins waited almost one year for a full fix.
The company has now included the fix in KB5095093, but it will not reach every device immediately. Microsoft says the rollout will happen gradually.
The fix should become fully available with the next monthly Windows update.
Patch Tuesday Rollout Expected Next
Because KB5095093 is a June C-release preview update, the fixes should reach more users through the next Patch Tuesday release.
Preview updates are optional, but they often include fixes that Microsoft later ships more broadly in the next mandatory monthly update.
Microsoft recommends installing the latest Windows update to receive the newest fixes and improvements.
Until the fix reaches all affected systems, users and IT admins can continue using Microsoft’s previously published workarounds.
In other Windows update news, Microsoft recently released KB5095189, a new Out-of-Box Experience update.
The OOBE update targets the setup process that runs after Windows installation and aims to improve the first-run experience for Windows users.
