It’s been nearly six months since Google first announced Googlebook, its new premium laptop platform. As of now, the first five models from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo are now available to purchase. However, it seems the company isn’t done just by launching the regular Googlebooks. At Android Dev Summit 2026, the Google reportedly confirmed that detachable Googlebooks are coming soon.

Googlebook is expanding beyond clamshells and convertibles

During its developer keynote, Google described the platform as covering large-screen devices across clamshells, convertibles, and soon detachables. That’s an obvious sign that Google wants its new laptop platform to support tablet-style hardware.

For anyone unfamiliar, detachable devices feature a touchscreen display and a removable keyboard. Think Microsoft’s Surface lineup, where users can switch between laptop productivity and tablet convenience.

Interestingly, Google has not revealed a model name, launch date, or pricing for these upcoming devices. The announcement was primarily aimed at developers, suggesting that software preparation remains an important part of the rollout.

Lenovo could bring the first detachable Googlebook

Speaking of hardware partners, Lenovo appears to be a strong candidate for the first detachable model. Earlier leaks have already gave us a detailed look at a Lenovo tablet featuring a removable keyboard, an integrated kickstand, and Google’s distinctive Glowbar.

The device has reportedly been associated with the Lenovo Googlebook Duet name. However, Lenovo has yet to officially confirm the product or its specifications.

In addition, it seems there is also some software work left. Google’s current Googlebook interface still has landscape limitations, including its home screen, Overview, and app tray. Full-screen applications can rotate into portrait mode, but the broader interface needs further refinement.

That could become especially important for a device designed primarily as a tablet. Google will need to make its desktop experience comfortable in both orientations.

What do you think about the idea of detachable Googlebooks? Would you buy one if it’s out in the near future? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
