When you attempt to open one of Microsoft Office’s programs and are met with the Appvisvsubsystems64.dll is missing from your computer error message, your MS Office installation files could have been corrupted.
Aside from missing DLL files, there are also other reasons why you cannot open the MS Suite apps.
How do I fix appvisvsubsystem64.dll is missing from your computer?
1. Perform DISM and SFC scans
- Hit the Start Menu icon, type cmd in the search bar, and click Run as administrator.
- Type the following commands and press Enter after each one:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
If the Microsoft Office installation files are corrupt, the SFC scan can detect missing or corrupt files, and then the DISM can help repair them.
2. Start the MS app in Safe Mode and Disable Add-Ins
- Press Windows + R key to open the Run dialog box, type excel.exe /safe, then click OK to start Microsoft Excel in Safe Mode. (If it’s another app like Word or Outlook, simply replace the first word).
- Click on File in the top menu bar, then click on Options from the menu on the left.
- Tap on Add-ins on the right, select Excel Add-ins, then tap on the Go button.
- Uncheck the boxes next to the active Add-Ins and click OK to save the changes.
- Restart Excel and check if the problem persists.
3. Repair the Microsoft Office suite
- Hit the Windows + R keys to open the Run command.
- Type appwiz.cpl in the dialog box and press Enter.
- Select your Microsoft Office suite software. Then, click the Change button to open a repair utility for MS Office.
- Select the Online Repair option and click the Repair button.
If the Microsoft Office installation files are corrupt by any chance, running the repair tool can recreate new ones and allow you to launch any of the MS suite apps.
4. Scan for viruses
- Press the Windows key, search Windows Security, and click Open.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Next, press Quick scan under Current threats.
- If you don’t find any threats, perform a full scan by clicking on Scan options just below Quick scan.
- Click on Full scan then Scan now to perform a deep scan of your PC.
- Wait for the process to finish and restart your system.
5. Reinstall MS Office
- Navigate to your browser and download the Office removal tool and hit the Install button.
- Agree to the terms and conditions.
- Select the version you wish to install. If you see multiple instances of MS Office, check the boxes for each one.
- Click on the Next button.
- Uninstall the program and restart your PC.
- Visit the Microsoft Download Center and click the Download button.
- Follow the on-screen prompts and install it on your PC.
6. Run the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter
- Download the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter and install it.
- Open it and click on Next.
- You’ll be asked whether you have a problem installing or uninstalling a program. Select one option.
- Next, you’ll be asked to select the program that is not installing. Pick the problematic program from the list.
- The troubleshooter will start scanning for problems.
- Once it completes, you’ll be presented with two options. Pick either and wait for the troubleshooter to recommend fixes.
This troubleshooter will be able to detect whether there was unfinished business during the installation or uninstallation of Microsoft Office and repair or remove any problematic files in readiness for a fresh installation.
While missing DLL files could prevent you from launching certain apps, keep in mind that some apps only open in Safe Mode especially when the installation files are corrupt. Also, remember to keep your app updated and avoid downloading from third-party sources.
