Gmail Users Can Now Change Their @gmail.com Address, Google Confirms

change gmail address

Google is making meaningful changes to Gmail, following recent Gemini integrations across its services. The company has now started rolling out a feature that allows users to change their existing @gmail.com address without creating a new account.

Google rolls out long-requested Gmail address change option

As Bleeping Computer reports, Google now lets users switch their @gmail.com address to a different @gmail.com address directly from account settings. The option appears under Google Account > Personal Info > Email > Google Account email, once it becomes available for an account.

Until now, Gmail users had no way to rename an address. Anyone unhappy with an old or unprofessional handle had to create an entirely new Google account and migrate data manually.

How Gmail address changes work

When you change your Gmail address, your original email becomes an alias linked to the same account. Messages sent to both addresses land in the same inbox, and you can sign in using either address across Google services like Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Drive, and Photos.

All existing data stays intact, including emails, files, photos, and messages. Google also allows users to revert to a previous address at any time.

However, limits apply. You can only change your Gmail address once every 12 months, with a maximum of three changes overall, resulting in up to four total addresses per account.

This Gmail update joins several recent changes across Google’s ecosystem. The company recently added support for editing password-protected Microsoft Office files directly in Google Drive, improving interoperability with Office documents.

Google has also introduced Gemini Personal Intelligence in beta, expanding its AI-powered tools across Gmail and other services.

If the Gmail address change option does not appear yet, Google has not enabled it for your account. The company continues a gradual rollout to all users. To learn more about this feature, check out Google’s support document.
