Lenovo Draws a Clear 16GB Line for Copilot+ PCs
Lenovo’s IdeaPad Vibe recently leaked, followed by a more detailed look at its hardware specifications. The specifications reveal a clear dividing line between 8GB and 16GB configurations.
According to Windows Latest, Lenovo classifies IdeaPad Vibe models with 16GB of RAM or more as Copilot+ systems, while configurations with less than 16GB fall into the non-Copilot category.
That distinction applies even when an 8GB model uses the same AI-capable AMD Ryzen AI processor as a 16GB version. The processor alone does not determine whether a laptop qualifies as a Copilot+ PC.
16GB remains a Copilot+ requirement
Microsoft requires Copilot+ PCs to meet several hardware requirements, including an NPU capable of at least 40 TOPS, at least 16GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, and at least 256GB of storage.
AMD Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen AI 400 processors can meet the required NPU performance. However, an IdeaPad Vibe configuration with one of those processors and only 8GB of RAM still falls short of the Copilot+ specification.
That makes memory capacity one of the simplest ways to separate Lenovo’s lower-cost systems from models aimed at Microsoft’s local AI features.
8GB Windows laptops are returning
The split also comes as manufacturers reconsider how much RAM entry-level laptops need.
Rising RAM prices have increased pressure on PC makers to offer cheaper configurations, making 8GB models more attractive for lower-priced Windows laptops.
Microsoft had been pushing 16GB as a stronger baseline for newer PCs, particularly as Copilot+ hardware entered the market. At the same time, the company is working to improve Windows 11 performance on systems with less memory.
Lenovo highlights a two-tier Windows PC market
The leaked IdeaPad Vibe specifications show how the Windows laptop market could split more clearly around memory.
Cheaper 8GB systems can still use modern processors, including chips with capable NPUs, but they will miss the Copilot+ badge and some of Microsoft’s local AI experiences.
Models with 16GB or more sit on the other side of that line, meeting the memory requirement needed for official Copilot+ certification.
For buyers, the distinction could become increasingly important. An 8GB laptop may carry the same processor family as a more expensive model, but 16GB remains the minimum if Copilot+ support matters.
