OpenAI and Microsoft are stepping up their cybersecurity partnership as AI models are being used for both cybersecurity and threat actors. Both companies say they will work more closely to apply advanced AI systems to real-world security challenges.

OpenAI gives Microsoft access to advanced cyber models

OpenAI will provide Microsoft with access to its most cyber-capable models through its Trusted Access for Cyber program. In return, Microsoft will use its security teams to help protect OpenAI’s models, infrastructure, and shared customers.

This builds on existing efforts like Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative, which focuses on improving security across its ecosystem. The companies say they want to improve the security across software systems as AI technology continues to improve.

As artificial intelligence is used by threat actors, the partnership looks to keep cybersecurity teams ahead. The companies also noted that they plan to work with other companies to improve protection across open-source and enterprise environments.

Focus moves to AI-driven defense

Both companies suggest that AI will play a larger role in cybersecurity going forward. Instead of working separately, they are aligning resources to respond faster to emerging threats.

Details are still limited, but the direction is clear. As AI models get more powerful, companies are moving toward deeper collaboration to manage risk and improve defense systems.

The question now is whether these joint efforts can keep pace as AI-driven threats continue to evolve. OpenAI has already launched GPT-5.4-Cyber to deal with emerging threats, and Anthropic is doing something similar with Claude Mythos.

However, it’s worth noting that Mythos isn’t publicly available, but a third party has managed to access it, and Anthropic is investigating the incident.
