Microsoft Brings AI Document Generation to Word on iOS
Copilot can’t create docs, insert images, or handle comments
Microsoft continues expanding its AI push across Office, this time bringing new Copilot-powered writing features to Microsoft Word on iPhone. After improving the commenting experience on iOS, the company now focuses on helping users create content faster using natural language.
The feature is now live for Word on iPhone and requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license to access.

The new functionality allows users to co-create documents directly inside Word using prompts. Instead of starting from scratch, users can simply describe what they want, and Copilot generates a draft instantly.
To use it, users need to tap the Copilot icon within a document and enter a prompt. This can include a topic, idea, or specific instructions. Copilot then produces content based on that input, which users can further refine or edit.
Microsoft also added tools to make the experience more flexible. Users can update existing content using clear prompts, reference other parts of the document using the “/” command, and quickly undo changes if the AI output is not useful.
Still limited in key areas
Despite the new capabilities, the feature comes with several limitations. Users cannot create entirely new documents automatically, and Copilot does not support inserting images directly.
It also lacks the ability to add or edit comments and offers limited support for Tracked Changes, which may impact collaborative workflows.
This update is part of a broader push to integrate AI deeper into Microsoft’s productivity apps. The company recently introduced faster search across Office apps and added AI-powered alt text generation in Word and PowerPoint on Mac.
With Copilot steadily expanding across platforms, Microsoft is clearly positioning AI as a core part of the Office experience, including on mobile devices.
