Windows 11 WinRE Wi-Fi support is getting an upgrade that allows the recovery environment to reuse eligible wireless network profiles already saved in Windows.

Microsoft is testing the change in Windows 11 Beta Build 26220.9202 on the 25H2 branch. The improvement should make it easier to get online while using recovery and troubleshooting tools, particularly on devices that rely entirely on Wi-Fi.

WinRE can use Wi-Fi profiles saved in Windows

Windows Recovery Environment, or WinRE, can now automatically access eligible Wi-Fi profiles configured in the main Windows installation.

This means users may no longer need to manually connect to a supported wireless network when entering the recovery environment. Windows can instead reuse an existing network profile when it meets the necessary requirements.

Microsoft is also extending the feature to certain certificate-based Wi-Fi networks. That addition could prove particularly useful for enterprise devices where administrators use certificates to authenticate connections.

Getting online in WinRE previously required more setup

WinRE already offered several networking options, but it did not automatically use Wi-Fi profiles stored in the regular Windows environment.

Before this change, the recovery environment supported unauthenticated Ethernet connections, Wi-Fi profiles specifically configured for WinRE, and WPA2 and WPA3 networks that had to be connected to manually.

That setup could add another step during troubleshooting, especially on laptops, tablets, and other devices without an Ethernet connection.

With saved Wi-Fi profile support, users and IT administrators can potentially reach supported networks without configuring the same connection again inside WinRE.

Online recovery tools should become easier to use

Reliable networking matters more as Windows recovery features increasingly depend on internet connectivity.

The improved Wi-Fi support can simplify access to internet-dependent troubleshooting and repair tools from WinRE. It also reduces the amount of network configuration administrators may need to prepare before recovery begins.

Certificate-based network support makes the change especially relevant for managed PCs used in workplaces, schools, and other environments with more complex Wi-Fi authentication.

The feature remains in Beta testing

Microsoft currently limits the enhanced WinRE networking functionality to Windows 11 Beta Channel Insiders running the 25H2 branch.

The company could eventually bring the feature to a future stable Windows 11 release, but it has not announced a general availability date.

The networking change arrives alongside other Windows 11 updates currently under development. Microsoft is also removing WMIC and introducing additional File Explorer and context menu improvements.
