Microsoft is Offering Free Rechargable Batteries to Buyers Hit by Xbox Controller Shipping Hiccup

You need to raise a request in order to get free rechargable batteries

Microsoft is now offering free rechargeable battery packs to Xbox users after a recent controller packaging issue left some without the usual AA batteries. The issue came in light over the past few months, with reports suggesting some Xbox Wireless Controllers shipped without any batteries included in the box.

Now, Microsoft appears to be stepping in to resolve the issue. If you have purchased Xbox controllers starting December 2025 but didn’t receive AA batteries, you may be eligible to claim a free Xbox Rechargeable Battery and USB-C cable (via PureXbox).

In a support article, Microsoft has noted the process of claiming rechargable battery packs, which we have mentioned below.

How to request an Xbox Rechargeable Battery

To check eligibility, you’ll need to register the serial number of the controller through the devices page on Microsoft Account website and follow the instructions:

  • Go to account.microsoft.com/devices.
  • Select Register device > Register a new device.
  • Complete the registration flow.
  • Select the controller you registered, then select Start order, and follow the onscreen instructions.
  • For Category, select Accessory and for Issue Type, select Charge Kit.
  • If your controller is eligible, you’ll see an offer for Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C Cable – Send Immediately – One-Time Offer. Select this and continue with the steps to complete the order.

Note: If there are no service options available, then your controller is not eligible for this offer.

Once your request is submitted, you’ll receive an Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C Cable. Limit of one rechargeable battery per eligible controller.

Things to keep in mind:

  • A retailer receipt isn’t required.
  • You’ll need to register your controller using its serial number.
  • This process applies to select new Xbox Wireless Controllers and Xbox Design Lab controllers that did not include AA batteries in the packaging.

Last but not least, make sure you’re signed in with the Microsoft account you want associated with the controller

Do note that the rechargeable kit being offered isn’t a small freebie either. It typically retails for around $24.99, making this a fairly direct response to the issue rather than a gesture.

For those unaware, Microsoft has historically stuck with removable AA batteries for its controllers, although its competitors have moved to built-in rechargeable solutions. For affected users, it arguably ends up being a better deal than the standard AA batteries that would have originally shipped with the controller.
