Microsoft Teams Drops Elgato Stream Deck Support, Leaving Users Frustrated

Microsoft Teams has dropped its official Elgato Stream Deck integration after Microsoft deprecated the API that powered the plugin. The change leaves users without Stream Deck controls for common Teams meeting actions.

Stream Deck previously allowed users to control Teams features such as microphone, camera, screen sharing, and other meeting functions through physical buttons.

Users had reportedly seen warnings about the upcoming removal for roughly 10 months, but the integration has now stopped working.

The issue stems from Microsoft’s decision to retire the third-party device API used by the Teams Stream Deck plugin.

Elgato confirmed that its Microsoft Teams plugin depends on the deprecated API to communicate with Teams.

According to Elgato, Microsoft has not introduced a replacement API capable of supporting the same integration. That leaves Elgato unable to update the existing plugin or build an equivalent replacement.

The company says the API decision sits outside its control and has suggested Teams keyboard shortcuts as one possible workaround for affected users.

Stream Deck users criticize Microsoft’s decision

Stream Deck owners have started reporting that their devices no longer work as dedicated Teams meeting controllers.

Some users have criticized Microsoft for removing an integration point without offering developers an equivalent replacement. Others argue that the move makes third-party hardware integrations with Teams less attractive if Microsoft can retire the underlying APIs without providing alternatives.

The integration also had accessibility benefits for users who preferred large, customizable physical buttons over keyboard shortcuts or on-screen controls.

Microsoft has also faced criticism over how it communicated the change, particularly from users who relied on Stream Deck as part of their regular meeting setup.

Microsoft has not announced a replacement

Microsoft has not announced an equivalent API that Elgato could use to restore Stream Deck integration with Teams.

The company also has not said whether another supported method for third-party meeting controllers will arrive later.

The Stream Deck integration is not the only Teams functionality disappearing. Microsoft has announced that Microsoft Teams Live Chat is shutting down, while the company has also canceled several planned Teams and Outlook features.

At the same time, Microsoft continues changing the Teams experience, with a new Teams redesign and two-step sharing interface slowly rolling out.
