Next Xbox & PS6 Could Be Delayed Further Due to RAM Shortage
If you’ve been expecting the PlayStation 6 or the next Xbox to release around 2027 or 2028, this news might not please you. A new report suggests that Sony and Microsoft are considering delaying their next-generation consoles due to a significant rise in RAM prices amid industry-wide shortage. Guess what? The AI boom is to blame for the same.
The news comes via Insider Gaming, which reports that the spike in demand from AI companies building massive data centers has pushed memory costs up by several hundred percent in recent months. This has caused a shortage in supply across the tech industry. While PC gamers have already been reported to be affected by the sharp RAM price surge, it appears that the shortage may also hit console players.
Per the news outlet, both Sony and Microsoft are reportedly concerned about whether they can mass-produce next-gen hardware at a competitive price. As a result, internal discussions are said to be underway about pushing the launch of the PS6 and Xbox successor beyond the previously assumed 2027–2028 window. The companies are now aiming for 2029 or later as the new, real possibility for the launch.
Although the ongoing memory crunch is said to affect the future PS6 and Xbox consoles, the current ones could become more expensive. While both companies have already raised prices on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2025, additional increases could follow in 2026 as new units are manufactured at higher costs.
Xbox is believed to be more vulnerable in the short term, having been caught off guard by RAM shortages. Sony, however, is said to have stockpiled a larger supply of memory, potentially keeping the PS5 prices intact for now. But that’s not a guarantee. All that said, if RAM availability doesn’t improve, both platform holders may have little choice but to pass rising costs on to consumers.
