OpenAI has announced a significant upgrade to ChatGPT’s memory system, introducing a more advanced architecture designed to make conversations more relevant and personalized over time rather than starting fresh with every interaction.

The update builds on OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to give ChatGPT long-term memory capabilities, allowing the AI assistant to better understand user preferences, recall important details, and maintain context across conversations.

Memory system evolves beyond saved memories

OpenAI first introduced saved memories in February 2024. The feature allowed users to instruct ChatGPT to remember specific information, such as personal preferences, recurring projects, or other details that could improve future interactions.

While the feature provided a foundation for personalization, it relied heavily on users explicitly telling ChatGPT what information should be stored. As a result, memories could become outdated or incomplete over time, limiting the system’s effectiveness.

In April 2025, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT’s memory capabilities by enabling the chatbot to reference relevant information from previous conversations beyond the saved memories list. This enhancement was powered by a background process known as “dreaming,” which automatically identifies and curates useful information from a user’s chat history.

New architecture delivers stronger performance

According to OpenAI, the latest memory architecture builds on top of the dreaming framework while improving both capability and computational efficiency.

The company reports notable gains across several performance metrics. Factual recall has improved from 67.9% in 2025 to 82.8% in 2026. Preference adherence increased from 55.3% to 71.3%, while long-term accuracy rose from 52.2% to 75.1%.

OpenAI says these improvements help ChatGPT provide more consistent responses, better remember user preferences, and maintain accuracy over extended periods of use.

New memory controls for users

Alongside the upgraded memory system, OpenAI is introducing a new memory summary page that gives users greater visibility into what ChatGPT remembers about them.

The feature allows users to review stored information, update details, correct inaccuracies, and specify when certain topics should be referenced in future conversations.

The company says these controls are designed to improve transparency and ensure users remain in control of their personal information.

Rollout begins in the United States

The enhanced memory experience is available starting today for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers in the United States.

OpenAI plans to expand availability to additional countries in the coming weeks. The company also intends to bring the upgraded memory system to users on Free and Go plans as the rollout continues.

The memory announcement comes alongside several other recent OpenAI developments.

The company has expanded Codex with new job plugins, making it easier for developers to integrate coding workflows and automation tools. OpenAI has also launched a ChatGPT add-in for Microsoft PowerPoint, bringing AI-powered assistance directly into presentation creation.

In addition, Codex is now available through the ChatGPT mobile app, extending access to OpenAI’s coding assistant across more devices and platforms.
