Signal has quietly rolled out a new “Screen security” setting for its desktop app to block Microsoft’s controversial Recall feature in Windows 11. The new setting is turned on by default for all Windows 11 users.

With the new settings in place, if you try to screenshot Signal Desktop with screen security on, you’ll get a black frame and nothing else. Signal says it now uses Digital Rights Management (DRM) flags to ensure that “content won’t show up in Recall or any other screenshot application.

Well, it’s true that Windows 11’s Recall feature gives developers no easy way to say, “don’t capture this.” So Signal turned to digital rights flags that normally protect movies. In this case, it’s being used to keep your chats private.

Signal understands that sometimes Windows 11 users may need to capture screenshots. This is why the company has made it easy to find a disable toggle. You can go to Signal Settings > Privacy > Screen security to turn it off, though you’ll get a warning first.

Only Windows 11 users are protected by the new setting

If someone on Linux or macOS takes a screenshot, the Screen security setting doesn’t stop Recall from capturing screenshots. But for now, if you’re using Signal Desktop on Windows 11, this extra shield is already in place.
