Nintendo has rolled out a new system update for its latest console, introducing a feature aimed at improving how older games run on newer hardware.

With update 22.0.0, the company added “Handheld Mode Boost,” a feature designed to enhance backward compatibility for original Nintendo Switch titles when played on Switch 2.

Handheld Mode Boost upgrades older games on Switch 2

“Handheld Mode Boost” allows compatible games to run in handheld mode using their docked (TV mode) settings. This effectively removes previous limitations tied to the original Switch’s portable hardware profile.

Since Switch 2 features a 1080p handheld display, many older titles now render at higher resolutions and appear noticeably sharper. The upgrade brings a more refined visual experience without requiring developer patches.

According to Digital Foundry, the improvements go beyond simple resolution scaling. Games benefit from cleaner image output, improved texture filtering, and better lighting in certain scenarios. Even titles that originally ran at lower resolutions now look significantly clearer on the upgraded screen.

Performance gains and limitations to consider

The update also delivers measurable performance improvements in several games. Titles such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Persona 5 Royal, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 show enhanced visual quality, while more demanding games like DOOM, DOOM Eternal, and Alan Wake benefit from smoother performance.

In some cases, gains are substantial. Digital Foundry reports that Resident Evil 5 runs significantly faster compared to its original docked performance on the first Switch, with estimates suggesting up to roughly double the GPU performance in certain scenarios.

However, the feature comes with trade-offs. Increased power consumption is expected due to higher performance targets, and touch input may be disabled in some games when running in boosted mode. Additionally, the feature only applies to backward-compatible Switch titles and does not impact native Switch 2 games.

Despite these limitations, Handheld Mode Boost effectively acts as a system-wide upgrade for older titles, offering a noticeable improvement in both visuals and performance for players revisiting their game libraries.

In other news, reports suggest Nintendo may introduce a new Switch 2 model in the EU featuring a removable battery, while the company is also expected to scale back production following weaker-than-expected sales in the U.S.
