TikTok Users Worldwide Hit by Major Outage Days After U.S. Takeover
If you missed it, TikTok is now majority owned by U.S. companies, but the transition appears to have come with turbulence. Over the weekend, users around the world began reporting major service disruptions that affected core features of the platform.
TikTok users report widespread service disruptions
According to The Verge, the issues surfaced early Sunday morning and quickly spread across regions. Many users said they couldn’t upload videos at all, while others saw their clips stuck “under review” for hours or never published.
Upload failures, login problems, and broken FYP feeds
Beyond upload issues, users also reported trouble logging into their accounts. Others noticed that the For You Page algorithm stopped refreshing properly, showing repetitive or outdated content. Comment sections failed to load for some users, further adding to frustration.
Outage tracking services showed a sharp spike in reports early Sunday. While service appeared to improve later in the day, some users said problems lingered into Monday, suggesting the disruption was not fully resolved.
The timing of the outage quickly drew attention, as it followed closely after TikTok’s U.S. ownership transition. This led to speculation about backend changes or infrastructure adjustments causing instability.
Some users also raised concerns about political content suppression or censorship. However, reports of identical issues outside the United States point toward a broader technical problem rather than region-specific moderation changes.
Despite the scale of the disruption, TikTok has not issued an official statement acknowledging the outage or explaining what went wrong.
In related developments, Google Photos is testing a TikTok-style vertical video feed, while Microsoft recently confirmed it provided BitLocker recovery keys to authorities during an ongoing investigation.
