Visual Studio Code Update Released With Browser-Aware AI Agent Features
Version 1.119 introduces browser-aware AI agents and token optimization
Microsoft has released version 1.119 of Visual Studio Code only a week after the previous update. The release focuses on AI agent workflows, browser interaction, token optimization, and editor usability improvements.
The update also introduces OpenTelemetry tracing support, sandbox refinements, and a redesigned Markdown preview experience aimed at making navigation easier inside the editor.
AI agents gain browser interaction features
One of the biggest additions in version 1.119 is deeper browser integration for AI-powered chat sessions. Users can now attach browser tabs directly to chat conversations inside Visual Studio Code. Once shared, the tab enters a special state that allows the agent to read and interact with the webpage.
The new system also allows agents to detect unshared tabs already open in the browser. When access is needed, the agent can request permission, while users remain in control and can approve or deny the request at any time.
Microsoft appears to be pushing Visual Studio Code toward more contextual AI-assisted development workflows where coding agents can reference documentation pages, dashboards, or live web applications during sessions.
Token optimization reduces AI overhead
Version 1.119 also introduces a new token optimization system designed to reduce unnecessary AI usage. Microsoft moved todo list management tasks to lightweight background agents so the main model can focus more directly on coding-related work.
According to the company, the change lowers token consumption and may help extend AI usage limits during longer sessions. The feature remains experimental for now and ships disabled by default.
OpenTelemetry tracing support arrives
Microsoft also added OpenTelemetry tracing support for agent workflows. The new functionality helps developers monitor agent actions, step durations, and token usage during AI-assisted sessions.
The feature currently works with Copilot Chat agent sessions, Copilot CLI background agents, and Claude-based agent workflows. The addition gives developers and enterprise teams more visibility into how AI-driven tooling behaves behind the scenes.
Sandbox and Markdown improvements
The company also refined sandbox and trust behavior in this release. A new setting reduces interruptions caused by blocked network domains while still maintaining sandbox protections. Microsoft says the change should create a smoother workflow with fewer prompts and interruptions.
Markdown usability also received attention in version 1.119. Visual Studio Code now includes more visible toolbar buttons for switching between the Markdown editor and preview modes. While the functionality already existed, Microsoft redesigned the interface to make the feature easier to discover.
Visual Studio Code 1.119 is now available through the built-in automatic updater. Users can also download the latest version directly from the official Visual Studio Code website.
In other news, Microsoft recently rolled out an update for Visual Studio 2026, while GitHub has started prioritizing availability and infrastructure stability after several recent outages.
