XBOX Exclusives Remain Important, CEO Asha Sharma Says
XBOX exclusivity remains one of the most debated topics among fans, especially after Microsoft’s gaming division underwent major leadership and branding changes. While many players continue to request more exclusives, XBOX CEO Asha Sharma says the company is still evaluating its long-term approach.
XBOX continues to evaluate exclusivity case by case
During a recent Bloomberg Tech interview, Sharma discussed the challenges of balancing XBOX’s role as both a game publisher and a platform owner.
According to Sharma, XBOX must reach as many players as possible when publishing games. However, she also acknowledged that successful platforms typically rely on exclusive content and services to attract and retain users.
“We’re both a publisher and a platform,” Sharma explained, noting that XBOX is examining exclusivity decisions on a title-by-title basis rather than applying a single strategy across its entire portfolio.
Sharma’s comments stop short of confirming a broader return to platform-exclusive games. However, they suggest that Microsoft has not ruled out exclusivity as part of XBOX’s future strategy.
The executive said the company is studying how exclusivity works across the gaming industry while determining the best approach for individual titles.
That position reflects XBOX’s current challenge. Microsoft has invested heavily in expanding its publishing business through acquisitions and subscription services, but it also faces pressure to strengthen the value of the XBOX ecosystem.
While XBOX Game Pass remains a major selling point, many gamers argue that the platform lacks a consistent exclusive identity compared to competitors.
Exclusive content remains a key platform advantage
One detail from Sharma’s interview drew particular attention. When discussing platform growth, she referred to the need for exclusive “content and services” rather than focusing only on services.
That wording has fueled speculation that Microsoft could reserve certain future games, expansions, or experiences for XBOX platforms.
Exclusive content has traditionally played a major role in driving console sales and platform loyalty. Microsoft’s recent strategy, however, has increasingly brought XBOX-published games to competing platforms, including PlayStation.
As a result, many of XBOX’s most recognizable franchises no longer serve as permanent platform differentiators.
For now, XBOX appears committed to evaluating each game individually while considering both platform growth and publishing revenue. Whether that approach leads to more exclusives remains unclear, but the company has publicly acknowledged that exclusive content remains an important part of building a successful gaming platform.
In other XBOX news, Microsoft recently confirmed the next wave of titles leaving XBOX Game Pass, while a new Free Play Days lineup has also been announced.
