Xbox Steps In With Refunds After Red Dead Redemption Upgrade Fiasco
In early December last year, Rockstar Games offered a free Red Dead Redemption upgrade for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S owners. The upgrade, which was meant to be available at no cost, gave headaches to Xbox 360 players out there, as it didn’t go as planned.
What was the issue
Shortly after the rollout began, many Xbox 360 players reported that the free upgrade wasn’t appearing in their libraries. That too, after meeting the eligibility requirements. The worst part: many couldn’t access the Series X|S version, too. The issue reportedly lingered for days, creating confusion among players about whether the upgrade was actually live or restricted to certain accounts.
While Rockstar and Xbox did not publicly explain the root cause, the problem appeared to be tied to how ownership was being recognized across storefront listings. As a result, some players speculated that the free upgrade might never unlock for them. To avoid missing out, a portion of users went ahead and purchased the Series X|S version separately, even though they already owned the original release.
Refunds are now being processed automatically
Well, if you were among such players, there’s some good news for you. As reported by folks at PureXbox, Xbox is offering automatic refunds to Red Dead Redemption players who bought the current-gen version due to the upgrade issues. Over on Reddit, many players have confirmed that notifications of the refunds have reached the affected players. This also tells us that the Series X|S release was always intended to be free for eligible owners.

Xbox notes that refunds are being processed automatically. However, some users may receive them later than others. Players who do not see a refund immediately are advised to wait a bit longer before contacting Xbox Support.
