Microsoft Eyeing to Release Halo & Other Big Xbox Games Early in 2026 to Dodge GTA 6 Craze
Last year, several Microsoft executives teased that 2026 would be the year of Xbox. For those who don’t know, this year, Xbox is celebrating its 25th anniversary. But if you are among those who are interested in knowing Xbox’s 2026 roadmap, a report by Tom Warren for The Verge may have just spilled the beans for you.
Xbox 2026 rumored schedule points to Halo in summer, Fable likely in fall
According to Warren, Xbox’s internal release calendar is shaping up around the brand’s 25th anniversary. To celebrate it in its own way, Microsoft is reportedly planning to release entries across four of its biggest franchises, Forza Horizon, Halo, Gears of War, and Fable, all within the same year.
We already have one date locked in. Forza Horizon 6 launches on May 19, 2026, a detail Microsoft Playground Games confirmed during the recent Xbox Developer Direct. It has also confirmed that the racing game will come with cross-save support on all platforms.
Warren’s sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans say Halo Campaign Evolved, the single-player remake of the original 2001 Halo, is currently targeting a summer release window. Meanwhile, Fable is still on track for fall, matching what Playground Games has officially shared. Gears of War: E-Day, the upcoming prequel starring Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, is reportedly also aiming for the second half of the year.
Fear of GTA 6 clash
With Grand Theft Auto VI reconfirmed to launch on November 19, Microsoft reportedly wants nothing to do with that collision. With Take-Two confirming GTA VI’s marketing push begins this summer, Xbox is expected to move its biggest releases earlier in the year, rather than risk being sidelined by the GTA 6 wave. December, as usual, is reportedly being treated as a last resort.
Besides popular franchises, Xbox’s slate fills out quickly. Double Fine’s multiplayer project, Kiln, is said to be targeting April. New Starfield content is also expected “soon,” alongside a long-rumored PlayStation 5 version. One regional report even claims an April 7 PS5 launch, though Microsoft hasn’t confirmed that yet. Elsewhere, Fallout 3 Remastered is reportedly still deep in development, with no clear release window and little expectation that it will land in 2026.
Next-gen Xbox controllers and free ad-supported Cloud Gaming
If you are here looking for some details about hardware, Microsoft is said to be preparing next-generation Xbox controllers, which will reportedly feature built-in Wi-Fi to reduce latency, especially for cloud gaming. And speaking of cloud, Xbox is reportedly close to testing free, ad-supported Xbox Cloud Gaming with Insiders ahead of a wider rollout later in 2026.
