The SupportAssist app was created by DELL as an utility to improve the performance of your PC by clearing non-critical files, update drivers and eliminate active threats. However, Dell SupportAssist can’t help you update your BIOS. You will need to perform that action manually.
How can I update the BIOS on my DELL PC?
1. Temporarily disable Bitlocker
- Press Win + I to access Settings.
- Click on Privacy & security, then on Windows Security.
- Now, access Device security and click on Manage Bitlocker drive encryption.
- Click on turn off Bitlocker and confirm the action. You will need administrative privileges to make this change.
2. Download and install the latest BIOS firmware
- At this point, make sure your device is connected to a power source.
- Open the browser of your choice and go to the DELL support page.
- Here, you can use the Detect This PC option automated process that will launch SupportAssist, or enter the product ID and click the Search button to find your device.
- Go to the Drivers section, enter the Windows version that is installed on your device and download the latest BIOS for your system.
- If you don’t know what version is the current BIOS firmware, click on Search, type msinfo and click on System Information from the results. Look for BIOS version date and compare it with the one from the Dell website.
- If the version on the website is newer, download it on your computer, then double click the downloaded file.
- Wait for the firmware data to load and follow any onscreen instructions. If the system doesn’t prompt you to restart your PC, do that anyway.
If, for some reason, you can’t follow the instructions above, we also have a complete guide on how to update the BIOS.
To conclude our guide, if you were wondering if Dell SupportAssist can be used to upgrade the BIOS, the answer is no. However, the instructions above should help you do that safely and quickly.
We also have a guide on how to install Dell SupportAssist if you still need it and it’s not already installed on your DELL PC.
