The ERROR_PLUGPLAY_QUERY_VETOED (error code 683 / 0x2AB) occurs when a Plug and Play (PnP) operation is blocked (vetoed) by another process, driver, or system component. This typically happens when attempting to install, remove, or modify a device in Device Manager but another system component denies the request for safety or stability reasons.
How do I fix ERROR_PLUGPLAY_QUERY_VETOED?
1. Disconnect and reconnect the device
If the error occurs with a USB device, try unplugging it and plugging it back into a different port. If that doesn’t work, disconnect the device, uninstall its driver if the system has installed one, then plug it back into another USB port.
In case you’re using a USB hub, disconnect it and connect your device directly to a computer port.
2. Check Device Manager for conflicts
- Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand the available categories and look for devices with a yellow exclamation mark next to them (!).
- Right-click the device and select Properties → General tab, then check the error message.
3. Update or roll back drivers
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If the issue started after a driver update, choose Roll Back Driver (if available).
It’s also recommended to go to the manufacturer’s website and download the right driver for your device. You may also use a driver updater tool that will fix this problem automatically, without headaches.
4. Run the hardware troubleshooter
- Open Run (Win + R), type the following command and press Enter:
msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic
- Wait for the troubleshooter to scan your system and followed the on-screen instructions to fix the problem if any problems are found.
5. Restart Plug and Play services
- Open Run (Win + R), type services.msc and press Enter.
- Find Plug and Play in the list, right-click it, and select Restart.
- Also, restart Device Install Service and Device Setup Manager.
If the error persists, your hardware might be faulty. Try using the device on another computer. If using an enterprise-managed PC, contact IT support to check group policies. If you’re an advanced user, you may also use PnPUtil to check and fix the problem with your plug-and-play device.
