How to fix ERROR_PLUGPLAY_QUERY_VETOED

The ERROR_PLUGPLAY_QUERY_VETOED (error code 683 / 0x2AB) occurs when a Plug and Play (PnP) operation is blocked (vetoed) by another process, driver, or system component. This typically happens when attempting to install, remove, or modify a device in Device Manager but another system component denies the request for safety or stability reasons.

How do I fix ERROR_PLUGPLAY_QUERY_VETOED?

1. Disconnect and reconnect the device

If the error occurs with a USB device, try unplugging it and plugging it back into a different port. If that doesn’t work, disconnect the device, uninstall its driver if the system has installed one, then plug it back into another USB port.

In case you’re using a USB hub, disconnect it and connect your device directly to a computer port.

2. Check Device Manager for conflicts

  1. Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the available categories and look for devices with a yellow exclamation mark next to them (!).
  3. Right-click the device and select Properties → General tab, then check the error message.

3. Update or roll back drivers

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the affected device.
  2. Select Update driver and choose Search automatically for drivers.
  3. If the issue started after a driver update, choose Roll Back Driver (if available).

It’s also recommended to go to the manufacturer’s website and download the right driver for your device. You may also use a driver updater tool that will fix this problem automatically, without headaches.

4. Run the hardware troubleshooter

  1. Open Run (Win + R), type the following command and press Enter: msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic
  2. Wait for the troubleshooter to scan your system and followed the on-screen instructions to fix the problem if any problems are found.

5. Restart Plug and Play services

  1. Open Run (Win + R), type services.msc and press Enter.
  2. Find Plug and Play in the list, right-click it, and select Restart.
  3. Also, restart Device Install Service and Device Setup Manager.

If the error persists, your hardware might be faulty. Try using the device on another computer. If using an enterprise-managed PC, contact IT support to check group policies. If you’re an advanced user, you may also use PnPUtil to check and fix the problem with your plug-and-play device.
