ERROR_NO_GUID translation mostly shows up when you’re trying to create a new file, folder or when using certain apps.
It’s most likely caused by corrupt system files, low memory, or faulty apps. Follow below step by step instructions on how to fix it quickly.
How to fix ERROR_NO_GUID_TRANSLATION
1. Reboot in Safe Mode (if the error won’t go away)
- If the error keeps showing up on your screen and you can’t access your OS, power off your PC by pressing its power button.
- Turn it back on, and start repeatedly pressing the key designated to access your system’s Advanced Boot options menu. (It’s usually F8, Fn, or F12 – simply googling your laptop’s manufacturer name + advanced boot key will help you find it).
- When you see the Advanced Boot Options menu, select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Network (i.e. connected to the internet).
- Now your PC should start you’ll be able to access a version of Windows that only uses system apps.
- From this state, you can go to Settings and adjust what caused the error.
2. Run SFC Scan
- Press Windows key + S, type CMD and select Run as Administrator.
- Type sfc/scannow and press Enter.
- Wait for the scan to complete.
- Restart your PC and check if the ERROR_NO_GUID_TRANSLATION issue persists.
3. Free up memory
- Press Windows key+ S, type Disk Cleanup, and open the Disk Cleanup utility.
- Select the drive you want to free up space on – pick the one where the app you tried to use or folder you wanted to create was located. You can repeat the process if you have multiple drives and want to clean them all up.
- Check the boxes for the type of files you want to delete.
- Click OK to confirm and wait for the process to complete.
This tool will help you free up memory space which could stop the no GUID translation error from recurring.
If you’re afraid you might delete files you’ll need in the future, you can quickly check those locations beforehand or use a third-party PC cleanup tool that is more user-friendly and gives you more control over what you keep and delete.
4. Create a new user profile
- Open Settings and go to Accounts> Other Users.
- Select Add account.
- Enter a different email address from your current account, create a new Microsoft account if necessary, and hit next to continue.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to finish up.
- Go to the Power options in the start menu and sign out of your current account.
- Log into the new user account you just created and check if the error persists there.
If you no longer get the error on this newly created account, consider backing up your data and move to it completely. For the sake of saving up resources, it’s best to only use one user account.
That’s about it. Follow the steps above you should be able to fix ERROR_NO_GUID_TRANSLATION.
If the error doesn’t let you login into your Windows, start by accessing Safe Mode as shown in solution one. Then you can move to the other troubleshooting steps and address underlying errors.
Similarly to other errors such as ERROR_BAD_DEV_TYPE, ERROR_FT_READ_RECOVERY_FROM_BACKUP, ERROR_OPLOCK_BREAK_IN_PROGRESS, or ERROR_COULD_NOT_INTERPRET, this Windows error is fixable if you get to the bottom of it.
