Fable Is Back and More Alive Than Ever After Xbox Developer Direct Reveal
Playground Games finally pulled back the curtain on Fable at Xbox Developer Direct, delivering the first look into its long-awaited open-world action RPG.
This game is a full reboot of a franchise that allowed the developers to reimagine the world of Albion from scratch and deliver a new and unique experience.
The core mechanics of the game are back, including character customization, a fully open world with no level gating, and a reimagined morality system that is focused on your reputation. Your actions only matter if someone sees them, and how NPCs react depends on their own beliefs, not a universal moral scale, unlike in other games.
The game follows you from a young age as you discover your powers, and then jumps forward to adulthood. The plot revolves around an incident that turns your village to stone, which forces you on a quest to reveal the truth behind it. The game doesn’t force you to finish the main quest, and you can partake in side quest activities such as jobs. You can even settle down, or just explore the world at your own pace.
Combat combines melee, ranged, and magic into what Playground calls “style-weaving,” making each battle more fluid. Sword strikes, spells, and arrows can chain together without friction, while enemy weaknesses and emergent chaos add humor and strategy to fights.
The game uses the Living Population system, which makes the world feel alive. Albion is populated by over 1,000 persistent NPCs, and each has its own routine, home, jobs, and opinions about you. The latter can change based on your reputation in each settlement, and as your reputation changes, so will the dialog options, shop prices, and more.
Of course, the British humor is still present with awkward comedy and even mockumentary-style moments throughout the game. More details are coming before launch, but after this deep dive, Fable is finally starting to feel real again.
The game is set to launch this autumn on Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox Cloud, Steam, PS5, and day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
This isn’t the only game announced; we also got Forza Horizon 6, as well as Beast of Reincarnation. If you prefer something lighthearted and fun, there’s also a party multiplayer brawler called Kiln that might be up your alley.
