gears of war cross platform

After the announcement that Starfield is coming to PS5, followed by rumors about Indiana Jones and The Great Circle doing the same, it seems that another game might become available to other platforms.

This time, it’s Gears of War, and this has sparked a major controversy between the fans of the game. Here’s what we know so far.

Gears of War cross-platform rumors spark a raging debate online

As reported by Video Games Chronicle, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb stated in a podcast that Gears of War is being considered for cross-platform support.

“The other one that I’ve heard that’s definitely under consideration—it doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen, but it’s in talks—is Gears of War,”

“Gears of War is being considered for this,”

These rumors sparked a conversation on Reddit and some are speculating that a lack of exclusivity is better for the gaming market and gamers in general:

I think Microsoft is going to get out of the console race. Exclusivity is bad for the consumer and I think everything should be readily available on every system.

Others on the other hand believe that exclusivity is imperative for innovation and it’s pushing studios to develop better games:

Exclusivity is good in the sense that it is the competition that forces the other company to make better games that once again makes the first company make better games and so on and so on. To that same issue, it’s why PlayStation and Xbox competing against each other is good for everyone

This decision isn’t that surprising, and it might be a good business move that will boost the developer’s profits since a larger audience means more potential customers:

It would be more profitable to sell it on other consoles. Moreover, introducing Gears to Playstation would be easier with a remastered Gears collection. Only Gears 4, 5 and 6 would not make a big impact in Playstation without the backstory from the original 3.

For many, cross-platform support means more players online, and with cross-play support, many online games can continue to exist for a longer time.

the more people that have access to playing the game, the longer the servers will be populated in multiplayer, which is what I’d prefer.

On the other hand, many are skeptical that Gears of War will be available on PS5 because it’s a series associated heavily with Xbox:

I don’t think it will ever go to other systems. There are certain series (Halo, Gears, Fable, etc.) that will always be a part of their image and I don’t think they’ll want to splinter that off.

A couple of commenters are against this, simply because Sony is very strict regarding its exclusives and Microsoft shouldn’t concede first.

Imo yes it should stay exclusive to Xbox seeing as playstation doesn’t share lol

And lastly, many gamers are just apathetic towards this:

I personally do not care either way

This has been such a hot topic recently that many gamers are selling their Xbox consoles in protest. Hopefully, more information will be available soon, and Phil Spencer has scheduled a meeting on the future of Xbox that should address these issues and give us some official information.
