Key notes

  • Raspberry Pi is ARM-based computer and it can run only software that's optimized for it.
  • Running Opera on Raspberry Pi could be harder then you think due to compatibility issues.

Most browsers are good, and Opera is no exception. It has a built-in ad blocker, battery saver, and free VPN, which is why many want to install Opera for Raspberry Pi.

Pi can handle all types of software, and it’s even possible to run Windows 10 on Raspberry Pi 2.

But what about web browsers, such as Opera? To learn more about this subject, be sure to keep on reading.

Can Opera run on Linux?

Yes, Opera is available for Linux, and you can download it from Opera’s website. The software is available as a deb file, but there’s also a RPM version available.

Alternatively, you can download the Snap version for 64-bit processors.

What should I know about the Raspberry Pi 4?

Raspberry Pi 4 is a tiny desktop computer skinned down to the board and components, but it’s got all it takes to run all the functions and processes of a PC.

And it can be used not only as a computer but also as a game console, a router, and even as a network adblocker.

Some of the Raspberry Pi 4 features include:

  • CPU: Quad-core 1.5GHz Arm Cortex-A72-based processor
  • System on a chip: Broadcom BCM2711
  • GPU: VideoCore VI
  • Memory: 1/2/4GB LPDDR4 RAM
  • Connectivity: 802.11ac Wi-Fi/ Bluetooth 5.0, Gigabit Ethernet.
  • Ports: 2 * USB 3.0, 2 * USB 2.0
  • Power: 5V/3A via USB-C, 5V via GPIO header
  • Expandability: 40-pin GPIO header
  • Video and sound: 2 * micro- HDMI ports supporting 4K@60Hz displays via HDMI 2.0, MIPI DSI display port, MIPI CSI camera port, 4 pole stereo output, and composite video port

Although Raspberry Pi 4 is a small computer, it uses ARM CPU, similar to the one in your smartphone. Therefore, it can only work with software that is written for ARM architecture.

How do I use Opera for Raspberry Pi?

Is it possible to install Opera on Raspberry Pi?

The short answer is no, Opera won’t run Raspberry Pi simply because the developers haven’t released the ARM version of the software.

Although Opera is available for Linux using Snaps, it won’t work on Raspberry Pi due to its architecture.

What are Linux Snaps?

Linux Snaps give users a way to run any application on a Linux environment. The application is bundled with all its dependencies, so it should work right out of the box.

It’s important to mention that app that are running as Snaps are running in a virtual environment and are getting automatic updates.

The great thing about Snaps is that existing applications can be packaged as Snap, and by doing so, they can run on Linux.

Why can’t I install Opera?

Opera is available for Linux as a Snap, but when you visit the Opera Snap page, you’ll notice that only amd64 version is available. That’s the version for 64-bit PC processors.

As previously mentioned, Raspberry Pi uses an ARM processor that is vastly different that your PC CPU. As such, it’s not possible to run software created for amd64 architecture on ARM devices.

This means that currently, it’s impossible to run Opera on Raspberry Pi since there’s no compatible ARM version available. If Opera releases an ARM version of its Snap, you’ll be able to install it on ARM devices.

As you can see, it’s not possible to use Opera on Raspberry Pi, so why not use a lightweight browser for your Raspberry Pi 4 instead?
