Microsoft Removes Legacy Calendar in Teams, New Calendar Now Mandatory
Microsoft has focused heavily on Microsoft Teams recently, rolling out Brand Impersonation Protection and expanding premium features to more users at no extra cost. Now, the company is pushing another notable change that affects everyday workflows.
According to an update shared via the Admin Center, Microsoft Teams is losing its “legacy” calendar option. Microsoft will remove the toggle that allowed users to switch back to the old calendar view, making the new Teams calendar mandatory for everyone.
Legacy calendar removal makes the new Teams calendar the default
The change standardizes the calendar experience across all Teams users. Once Microsoft completes the rollout, everyone will use the updated calendar interface with no option to revert.
The new Teams calendar relies on WebView2 architecture, which can consume more system resources. On lower-end or older PCs, this design may cause performance slowdowns, especially during heavy multitasking. Users familiar with the legacy layout may also notice differences in navigation, features, and overall behavior.
Microsoft says the move supports its broader plan to unify Teams with the Microsoft 365 calendar ecosystem, bringing it closer to the experience found in Outlook and related services.
The calendar update does not stand alone. Microsoft is also redesigning Planner and removing several well-liked features, a move that has already sparked mixed reactions from users.
