PlayStation Network Branding to Be Phased Out by Sony in 2026
Sony Interactive Entertainment is preparing to retire one of its most recognizable labels, as the company plans to phase out the “PlayStation Network” (PSN) branding by September 2026.
According to Insider Gaming, the move will focus entirely on visual identity, meaning players will not experience any changes to functionality or services. Core features such as online multiplayer, friends lists, and trophies will continue to operate as usual.
No changes to core services
The decision reflects Sony’s effort to align its branding with the broader PlayStation ecosystem, which now extends beyond traditional online services into subscriptions, cloud gaming, and cross-platform experiences.
Despite the branding shift, the underlying infrastructure that powers PlayStation services will remain intact. For users, this means no disruption to accounts, purchases, or online interactions during or after the transition.
Developers must follow new branding rules
Sony plans to implement the change across all Sony Interactive Entertainment assets. This includes user-facing interfaces as well as backend and developer-facing materials tied to the PlayStation platform.
Developers will receive advance notice of the update through the Technical Requirements Checklist (TRC), with changes expected to roll out in fall 2026. Future game releases and platform integrations will need to follow updated branding rules that remove references to PSN.
Access to these updated requirements will be available through PS5 DevNet, where developers can review compliance guidelines and prepare their projects accordingly.
Replacement branding still unknown
Sony has not yet revealed what branding will replace PSN, leaving open questions about how the company plans to position its online ecosystem moving forward.
The change marks a significant shift for PlayStation, as PSN has been a central part of the brand identity since its introduction in 2006.
In other PlayStation developments, Sony recently released a new system update for PlayStation 4, while PlayStation 3 also received an unexpected firmware update. Meanwhile, the RPCS3 emulator continues to evolve, now offering Steam library integration for easier access to emulated titles.
