Those of you that own Dell computers may have noticed that sometimes your Internet speeds go down under certain conditions. Additionally, you may have noticed that when that happens, Smartbyte is usually running in the background.

Before discussing whether or not the two may be related, some of you would probably want to know what Smartbyte is.

What is SmartByteTelemetry.exe?

SmartByte is an application tool that automatically detects when you’re streaming video and gives that feed most of the available Internet connection.

If you want have access to the Smartbyte network service, you’ll have to buy a new Dell system such as the Inspiron 27 7000 or later. Unfortunately,  no information was revealed about making it available as a standalone utility.

The utility, which is enabled by default, works with both Intel and Realtek wireless chips, so you don’t have to worry about installing new Smartbyte drivers and services to get it.

That being said, you would expect that by having this tool installed your Internet speeds should regulate better when streaming videos.

Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case, as more users are actually complaining about the tool rather than praising it.

If anyone has really fast internet and when you do a speed test you only get 100 Mbps, check to see if Dell has slipped the SmartByte application on to your PC.

I have a 400 Mbps connection and 802.11AC wifi and my Inspiron PC would only get 100 Mbps at my ISP’s official speedtest site.  i went through 3 different AC cards thinking it was them because my Ipad would always give me a speed of 400Mbps.

How do I remove Smartbyte.exe from my PC?

1. Disable Smartbyte

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
  2. This will open the Task Manager
  3. Go to the Startup tab

  3. Scroll until you find any application with SmartByte in the name
  4. Click each SmartByte entry and click Uninstall

  6. Repeat the process with all Smartbyte apps

It all depends on whether you find it to be more of a nuisance than a help. If you do decide and not using it anymore, you can try to disable it, or get rid of it altogether.

If you want to reinstall SmartByte, all you need to do is perform a driver update on your Dell PC using the Dell Update feature.

By following these steps, you will be able to stop Smartbyte, either temporarily or permanently, from running on your Windows 10 PC.

It’s interesting that SmartByte shows up on my Taskbar when it’s operating, but the folks who installed it gave it a blank icon. So it’s there, and operating, but it’s invisible. I only spotted it because I happened to hover, and saw the line below the icon indicating it was doing stuff.

If they have to be that sneaky, it tells me what I need to know about their program.

SmartByte always installs when I do a Dell System update, and it’s driving me nuts b/c it really cuts my network speeds. Thank you for this article.

I spent 6 months trying to figure out why my speed dropped to half, even accusing my isp for capping me, till I found out that Dell secretly slipped in Smartbyte on my laptop and was using it’s customers to beta test it’s buggy software. I won’t be buying another Dell.
