Windows 10 User Claims Microsoft Auto-Installed Windows 11 Without Permission While PC Was Idle

It’s been nearly five months since Microsoft officially ended support for Windows 10. If you aren’t ready to move on, which many users are not, the company offers the option to enroll in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program to continue receiving important security patches.

That being said, Microsoft has been urging Windows 10 users to upgrade to Windows 11 for better features and enhanced security. It also appears that the company may be automatically upgrading some Windows 10 systems to Windows 11, at least according to one Reddit user who is quite furious at Microsoft.

A Windows 10 user reports unexpected automatic upgrade to Windows 11

Folks over at Neowin spotted a Reddit post from user djseifer, who claims that their system automatically started updating to Windows 11 even though they had not approved it. This reportedly happened when the user went to take a shower, leaving their system on for almost half an hour.

According to the post, Microsoft had been prompting the user to upgrade to Windows 11 for the past month or two, but they had been declining. The user says they were receiving frequent pop-ups asking to install the update, appearing next to the shutdown and restart options.

Although Microsoft is known for nagging Windows 10 users to update, it remains unclear what exactly may have caused the system to begin installing Windows 11, since the process typically requires user approval to start.

The news outlet speculates that an older update linked to the surge in upgrade prompts and notifications might still have been present on the affected system, potentially triggering the installation without clear consent. Not to forget, users have also reported numerous bugs in Windows, so it could have been one of those cases as well.

If you do not want to experience similar issues, the safest approach is to keep the Windows Update toggle turned off.
