Google's Gemini in Chrome Promo Takes Dig at Copilot, Tells Edge Users: Get AI Assistance "Without Switching Tabs"
Google shows different Gemini messages across rival browsers.
Google is promoting Gemini in Chrome on its homepage with browser-specific messaging that directly targets Microsoft Edge’s Copilot. The search giant uses different promotional wording based on which browser visitors are using, with the Edge version delivering a clear competitive jab.
Gemini in Chrome is Google’s AI assistant, integrated directly into the browser as a side panel. It launched in the U.S. in January 2026 and expanded to India in March 2026.
Gemini can summarize content across multiple tabs, compare information from different websites, and work closely with Google apps like Gmail, Calendar, Maps, and YouTube. It also includes Nano Banana for AI image generation and Auto-Browse for completing tasks on paid plans.
Gemini in Chrome promo message Targets Copilot in Microsoft Edge
Google shows different promotional text based on the browser users are using to visit Google.com, appearing directly below the search box.
Chrome and Brave users see: “New! Say hello to Gemini in Chrome, your new personal browsing assistant”.

Edge users get a different message: “New! Get AI assistance without switching tabs. Try Gemini in Chrome.”

Firefox and Opera users see: “New! Get AI assistance straight from your Gemini in Chrome side panel. Try now”. This message emphasizes Chrome’s side panel feature.

Google rotates multiple variants. During testing by Windows Report, another prompt for Chrome said: “New! Never browse the same way again with Gemini in Chrome. Want to learn more?”
Google has promoted its products on the homepage before, including earlier nudges for Chrome users to try Gemini. With Gemini in Chrome now rolling out widely, the company has expanded to targeting specific browsers, including Edge users.
While homepage promotions are common for Google, this campaign stands out for its direct focus on Microsoft. The tailored messages show that Google isn’t just promoting a feature; it is actively trying to draw users away from Edge’s Copilot.
All homepage prompts link to google.com/chrome/ai-innovations. The campaign parameters show this is an April 2026 initiative.
Google is also testing real-time AI-powered suggestions in Chrome based on the tabs you have open.
