Crimson Desert Shows Off Mech Combat and Expansive Open-World Action
With several high-profile releases on the horizon, April already has its lighter moments locked in with Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, but players craving large-scale action have something far more intense to look forward to. Crimson Desert has received an extensive new gameplay showcase that offers the clearest look yet at its ambitious scope.
As reported by GameSpot, Pearl Abyss has released a 15-minute features overview video ahead of the game’s March 19 launch. The footage highlights a wide range of mechanics, including high-mobility traversal using a grappling hook, large-scale combat involving a pilotable mech, and even dragon riding that lets players soar across the world.
New characters, traversal systems, and a living open world
Crimson Desert follows Kliff, a mercenary protagonist fighting to save the medieval-fantasy continent of Pywel, a land fractured by political struggles and supernatural forces. The new footage introduces two additional playable companions, each designed to dramatically change combat flow.
One is a swift female warrior wielding an oversized claymore-style blade alongside a flintlock pistol, while the other is a heavily armored male fighter who combines brute strength with a massive axe and an arm-mounted cannon reminiscent of classic sci-fi weaponry.
Traversal plays a central role in the experience, with mid-air jumps, grappling hook swings, and free-flight on a dragon allowing players to move seamlessly across Pywel. The mech showcased in the video brings a different scale entirely, enabling missile-based destruction during large combat encounters and reinforcing the game’s cinematic ambitions.
Originally envisioned as a prequel to Black Desert Online, Crimson Desert has since evolved into Pearl Abyss’ first fully single-player title. Alongside its intense action, the game blends swordplay, wrestling-style melee techniques, and magic combat with quieter side activities such as cooking, fishing, crafting, and hunting, aiming to create a dense and reactive open world.
Crimson Desert launches on March 19 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Elsewhere in gaming, Nioh 3 recently received a free demo on Steam, while ARC Raiders rolled out a new anti-cheat system as developers continue refining their upcoming releases.
