Key notes

  • Discord just launched its AI companion, Clyde.
  • The chatbot can generate music playlists, send GIFs, or ask for recommendations.
  • It's currently out on the Alpha insiders' channel.

The war on AI is heating up as popular streaming app Discord just entered the conversation with its latest AI-powered chatbot, Clyde.

The San Francisco-based company announced that the chatbot serves as a companion that could perform multi-complexed searches and ask for recommendations for things like music playlists, GIFs, summaries, and books, on both public and private threads, ChatGPT style.

The feature is currently rolling out the Alpha channel, meaning it’s getting experimented on several select users only as we speak. With that said, being a new feature, you may come across a few bugs here and there. And, just like when Microsoft first rolled out Bing’s chat mode, it may not be able to generate content for every prompt just yet.

Clyde is experimental and might respond with content or other information that could be considered biased, misleading, harmful, or inaccurate even with safeguards in place. Clyde may not have information or be able to respond to every prompt.

On top of that, while you can draft messages using the same OpenAI technology on Slack, you won’t be able to do it here—yet.

How to use Clyde AI on Discord.

1. Make sure you’ve joined the Alpha insider program. If not, head over to the channel’s website. Click Download for Windows or Open Discord in your browser to download the client.

2. Once it’s available for you, go to Server SettingsIntegrations

3. Click Enable (or Disable to perform otherwise).

4. Type ‘@Clyde’ on any thread to summon the chatbot.

Being an Alpha insider-only feature means Clyde is still prone to errors. This is the most unstable version of Discord, with lots of updates. Bugs usually happen here so use this client at your own risk.

On another hand, Microsoft, who’d also paid billions in investment in OpenAI, has integrated the latest GPT-4 technology into its 365 office apps ecosystem. That means, it’s about time we’ll see this AI chatbot feature coming on Teams, Slack’s competitor.
