Fortnite matchmaking error 1 will prevent you from playing the game online. If this error occurs, you won’t be able to join the matchmaking or play solo or in a party, but there are ways to fix this.
Why does Fortnite say matchmaking error?
This is caused by network or party issues. Crossplay or custom code can also cause this issue.
How can I fix Fortnite matchmaking error 1?
Before we start fixing this issue, try restarting your game, device, or router. Temporarily leaving the party can also help.
1. Remove custom code
- Start the game.
- Navigate to the Custom Options in the bottom right.
- Remove the custom code and click OK.
- Check if the problem is resolved.

3. Enable crossplay
On PS5, follow these steps:
- Open the Options menu and choose Settings.
- Locate Allow cross platform play and set it to Yes.
- After making this change, try to matchmake again.
On Xbox, do the following:
- Press the Xbox button and go to Settings.
- Navigate to Account and select Privacy & online safety.
- Next, go to Xbox privacy.
- After that, select View details & customise.
- Head over to Communication & multiplayer.
- Set You can join cross-network play to Allow.
- Save changes, go back to the game, and test if it works.
This may also come in handy if you encounter error code 6.
4. Change the matchmaking region
- Open Settings.
- Next, set a different Matchmaking region. Use a region closest to you for the best performance.
- After switching the server, check if the issue is gone.
Keep in mind that changing the region will affect your latency, so be sure to check Fortnite ping before choosing the right region for you.
Is matchmaking down in Fortnite?
- Navigate to the Epic Games Status page.
- Expand the Fortnite section.
- Check if matchmaking is operational.
Fortnite matchmaking error 1 is usually caused by your settings, and after adjusting it, you should be able to get back into the game. This isn’t the only issue you can encounter, and many reported that Fortnite is stuck on please wait screen.
